Flourish is a platform for data visualization and storytelling. Flourish makes it super easy for anyone with a spreadsheet to create beautiful and powerful data visualisations and interactives. It’s currently being used by thousands of journalists and analysts all over the world.
We’re now looking for a developer intern to join our team in London for a period of about three months. The role is part of a rolling programme and reports to the Head of Newsrooms & Design.
As part of this role, you’ll help us build and improve Flourish visualization templates and build cool things with our forthcoming API. You’ll also chip in more generally, for example helping with customer support and generating ideas for new visualization templates.
You’ll work on exciting projects that are a core part of the Flourish app. Our previous interns worked on projects such as the Chord Diagram template and Election Results Chart, both of which have been used and seen by huge audiences.
We expect you to be able to work independently on projects, though we will give you enough support and guidance to make sure you’ll learn new things during the internship.
Flourish interns are treated as proper team members. They join us on work trips, produce real published work that builds their portfolio, and aren’t expected to do the washing up or make coffee (we have a Nespresso machine for that!).
You’re familiar with the basics of web development and responsive web design - your projects are on the public web, and look good on mobile devices – and you’re familiar with the basics of Git.
You might be a graduate from university or a bootcamp, or you might be self-taught. But either way, you‘re interested in data visualisation and data journalism, and can talk to us about some of your favourite projects by other teams.
You enjoy getting to know your colleagues and work well in a close-knit team.
You have the right to live and work in the UK and are able to base yourself in London.
Flourish is a small, talented team combining decades of collective experience in development, data, visualization and journalism/publishing.
Our beautiful office in central London is an exciting place to work, with a fun and collaborative vibe and excellent lunches on neighbouring Leather Lane.
The internship is paid at the London living wage and runs for around three months, starting in April. Precise dates are flexible.
Send a CV, a few examples of your work and a link to code you’ve written to email@example.com. Alternatively, feel free to email us with any questions.
We particularly encourage applications from people with non-traditional programming backgrounds.
Please spread the word instead! And keep an eye out for our other vacancies.
