Getting started

In the Flourish template chooser, you can choose from a variety of starting points that work as a foundation of your visualization. Once you select a starting point, you can adjust the settings to create the perfect line, bar, pie or area chart that fits your data and branding guidelines.

Creating a visualization

Making a line, bar, pie or area graph is easier than ever – simply choose one of our starting points in the Flourish template chooser. Even if you initially select a chart type but later decide to switch to a different one, there’s no need to worry. With a simple selection from the dropdown menu, you can easily make the transition to a different chart in the Flourish preview window.

The default data in the Line, Bar, Pie template is structured in a wide data format. This means that you would normally have one column for your time series, similar to our column A , and multiple columns for your values such as columns B-E .

However, in certain cases, you may need to convert your data into a long format, where each row represents a unique observation. With the long data format, you can take full advantage of the grid of charts feature, as well as apply additional filters (column D ).

Whether that’s through axis movement, time sliders or advanced filters, incorporating motion in your data stories can help you communicate insights in ways that static charts can’t.

• Explorable filters and controls: Adding inline menus, buttons or sliders to your visualizations can be great for letting your viewers explore a rich dataset. Controls are also handy for Flourish stories – just click a filter or drag a time slider to capture a particular view of your data in a slide.

• Axis highlights and drag-and-drop annotations: Drawing attention to certain elements can make a graphic more informative and easier to read, in addition to proving useful context or clarifying your argument.

• Interactive popups: Users can hover over or click on data points to reveal additional information or explore more detailed views.
